A GREAT WEEK FOR COLLECTABLES
This week hundreds of million was spent on Art, coins, and many other areas of collectables. Leading the way was one of the greatest and freshest deals ever-The David Rockefeller Collection. The best painting realized $115,000,000.00 on an estimate of $80 million, while a gold money clip realized $75,000.00 on an estimate of $2,000.00! The sale was estimated at $500-$600 million total. The first session alone brought $646,000,000.00 million! Most likely this will be the first ever 1 Billion Dollar collection! The prices realized all have to do with lineage, quality, and freshness. In coins, it was the same thing that happened when the great Newman collection was sold. That is why we keep telling people-coins are a LONG term proposition. Finishing a top registry set then running to auction does NOT mean you will profit at all. Time creates value too.
We enjoyed a totally unexpected week of strong sales. Our biggest sale was an awesome 1C 1793 CHAIN AMERICA PCGS AU58 CAC (a strong six figure coin). We doubt this coin will ever see light of day again in our lifetime. We sold many other mid five figure coins as well. Great coins are not growing on trees any more. Finding “Legend quality” happens now only every so often. In fact, the one area we can’t find many coins in-the $1,000.00-$10,000.00 range. All this proves how strong demand really is.
Also, to answer many questions we get about what Legend can handle, this week we flew out and picked up a large deal of “dreck”. Lots of cleaned Lincolns, raw Franklins, very low grade certified coins, and lots of cleaned and just junky coins. This stuff is actually easy for us to sell. You’ll never see any of it in our auctions or on our web site, but we will get our customer top dollar. We want people to know we have the ability to handle it all.
THE LEGEND AUCTION THIS WEEK
What a sale we have coming up this week! Since day one the public has responded with remarkable enthusiasm and strong bidding. Two weeks in, we realized this sale would have record registrants and record bidders. We really won’t know (but fully expect) record prices until the day of the sales.
The only thing different about this sale is its size. As with all Legend Regency Sales, it is chocked full of collector consignments and really cool REAL quality coins. We never expected a sale of this size to happen for us (we do want to make this clear-we do NOT want to be anywhere near as big as Heritage or Stacks). Our next sale will be back to normal with 500 or so MONSTER lots (really, wait until you see it).
Sadly, you won’t find many coins like what are included in the sale on the bourse floor anymore. So don’t think you can win lots at cheap prices. Use our estimates as a base. When you have top quality and extremely eye appealing fresh coins, you know bidders will fight over them. In the end, know all you did was pay the current market price.
We fully expect this auction to prove the coin market is continuing moving forward. Sales from our offices this past week confirmed that as well.
