1824 50C Half Dollar Capped Bust, Let Edge Overdate PCGS MS64 (CAC) A PHENOMENAL WICKED COOL COIN!

$25,000.00

We obtained this coin from the collector who purchased it from our 05/2022 auction. Here was the description:

Sitting comfortably near the APEX of the Condition Census, this O-103 is the second near-GEM we have had the pleasure of selling in the last two years, and like the other one, this one has a fantastic old time pedigree that matches the excellent quality. The O-103 is known as being the 1824 over various dates or a “jumble of recuttings.” While no one has ever concluded what the overdate actually is, remnants of a 0 and a 2 or 3 are evident with a glass. This is one of this cataloger’s (GC) favorite Capped Bust half dollar issues. While rated Rarity-1 in the literature, the frequency that this variety appears on the market is not what you would expect for such a common variety, and when they do appear, most tend to be VF to AU.

This coin is ultra high end, and when it last appeared in auction (January 1996), it appeared uncertified as part of the famed James Bennett Pryor Collection, and was called MS65. Sharply struck from an early die state, there are no die cracks and just a single obverse clash mark noted. We also note some raised die rust marks, suggesting this die was stored for some time before being repunched with the final digit and pressed into service. A bold, vibrant, underlying brilliant mint luster glows, highlighting the russet-rose, antique silver, and cobalt blue toning that envelopes both sides. The eye appeal is excellent, free of all but the most insignificant ticks.

Ex. Madison Estate, Superior, January 1979, lot 799; James Bennett Pryor Collection, Bowers & Merena, January 1996, lot 60.

PCGS 9, NGC 1, CAC 3. No CAC-approved example has ever sold in auction. The most recent example to sell in auction was the Chicago Collection Coin (ex Lester Merkin’s March 1967 auction, lot 327; Wayne G. Slife Collection; Lester Merkin’s February 1972 auction, lot 162; New York Connoisseur Collection, American Numismatic Rarities, March 2006, lot 746; Heritage, June 2014, lot 4517; Konstantine Collection, Legend Rare Coin Auctions’ Regency Auction 28, September 2018, lot 46; Chicago Collection, Regency Auction 47, lot 79) brought $24,675. Perhaps not as vibrant, this coin has a similar pattern and palette of color and with its CAC approval, it should bring more. Just a single MS65 is graded higher at PCGS, which has not sold in auction. A real prize for the advanced Bust half collector. Good luck.

PCGS 8, NGC 0, CAC 4. We do not know if this coin had been regraded or what ever. The qualities are SUPER HIGH END. And you do not need a glass to see the traffic jam of dates in the 4. VERY cool!

We consider this a Bust Half Collectors dream coin!
