1837 50C Half Dollar Capped Bust, Reeded Edge Reed Edge PCGS MS65+ (CAC)
$28,750.00
This was from our recent Regency Auction 58. It was part of the BST Type collection we had assembled for a picky customer. We never see these anymore-let alone to find one so GEMMY plus!
Here is the description:
What a gorgeous Premium GEM example of this lovely type coin. The GR-23 variety is a Rarity-2, which makes it perfect for type set purposes, and in this stunning, high end quality, it belongs in an AMAZING set! WOW! This coin is the FINEST KNOWN example from this die pair. All in all this is an ideal example of this short lived Reeded Edge type with the 50 C. reverse.
Intensely lustrous and beaming with radiating cartwheel brilliance. Antique, pearly silver centers are framed in a mottled iridescent frame of teal, gold, slate, and amber. The details are sharply struck up and the swirling bands of luster accent clean surfaces, the pleasing color, and frosted devices. The eye appeal is incredible.
In 1836 the Philadelphia Mint finally achieved a long standing goal of having a steam driven coining press. This meant that striking pressure would no longer be as varied as when coins were struck by men using a screw press. The mechanics of the steam press allowed for more precise and consistent striking pressure, as well as more uniform sizes to coins. This would thwart many counterfeiters who would be unable to match the high quality of the coins now being produced. In 1837 these Reeded Edge Half Dollars flowed into circulation, and this one was obviously set aside and carefully preserved.

The current PCGS Price Guide value is $25,000 and the other PCGS MS65+ CAC to sell realized $41.125 in our September 2022 sale of the Perfection Collection. This coin realized $25,850.00 in our sale. We’re not looking to get rich-just place a stunning GEM!
We felt this coin sold waaay too cheap! It is an impossible coin to find as nice as this!
