1846-O $5 Gold Liberty No Motto PCGS AU55 (CAC)

$11,000.00

We LOVE this coin! We purchased it out of our Regency 54 sale. It was too nice for us to pass up. In the sale, it brought $10,280.00.

Here is the description:

This is a very CHOICE example of this scarce New Orleans date half eagle in a wonderful state of preservation and boasting an exceptional eye appeal. The vast majority of the 58,000 1846-O $5s went right into circulation, and those that survived are apt to be in the VF or XF grade ranges; examples in AU55 are downright RARE, and this date is VERY RARE any finer, with none grading finer than MS62 at PCGS.

The present example boasts a bold and flashy semi-Prooflike reflective luster in the fields on both sides. There are some very minor traces of contact on essentially unworn surfaces. The wear, is limited to the slightest friction on the highest points and in the fields. The warm tangerine-honey gold patina adds to the outstanding visual allure. The details show crisp definition on both sides throughout, and are nice and frosted, giving this coin a beautiful look.

Ex Stack’s, June 1979, lot 90; Stack’s Bowers, April 2022, lot 6250.

PCGS 13, NGC 18, CAC 5. Two PCGS AU55 examples sold in the April 2022 Stack’s Bowers Auction, the other coin was from the Fairmont-Hendricks Collection, realizing $9,300 and this one realizing $10,200 (clearly this was the better of the two pieces), and finer than the one that sold in March 2014. The current Collectors Universe value is listed at $10,000. Just a dozen and a half examples are graded finer at PCGS and only five are finer at CAC. This is a marvelous opportunity for the New Orleans gold collector or specialist in this series, do not let it pass you by.

You won’t ever see many offered that look this coin. Its darn cool for an obsolete gold piece!
