1867 5C Nickel Shield Rays PCGS MS65 (CAC)
This is a terrific GEM piece!
The copper-nickel five cent piece was introduced in 1866 and partially through 1867, the reverse design was altered to remove the rays between the stars, as they added to the issues the mint had striking these new coins. The hardness of the alloy shattered the dies, as seen on this lovely GEM. Intensely lustrous and sharply struck this coin is very clean for the assigned grade. Icy pale iridescent surfaces gleam with a strong brilliance. Both obverse and reverse show numerous die cracks on both sides. The eye appeal is exceptional. A very popular date and short lived type.
PCGS 49, NGC 56, CAC 13. The most recent example sold for $5,280 in May 2022, well above the published levels. Just 14 coins are graded higher at PCGS, making this a great example for anyone working on a high-grade set.
