We apologize for being so consumed by everything gold and the stock market’s crumbling. We neglected to keep our eyes on the rare coin market. Everything we said about gold and gold coins has been true. BUT, we kind of forgot that it was tax time and that always leads to a lull around the beginning of April. Hence, we had slower sales of coins other than gold.
Coins like Bust Halves, Proof Type, or anything 3CS had been super quiet. Maybe now that the general collector base will return (hopefully) these areas will experience some demand. We highly recommend buying on the “dip” in these areas. GEM Bust halves have slid to below $10,000.00 on many dates. They have become seriously affordable in our opinion, as well as Proof Type. How can you not buy Barber Proof Type now? Sure, PR 64 coins are not so cheap, but Proof 65-66 coins have only seen sluggish price improvements in recent years. We LOVE all Proof Seated coins too. Keep in mind when buying silver Proof type-you MUST have clear mirrors. Toning is okay, but you should not buy a milky or hazy coin.
The “deep black hole” as we call it, is as big as it ever has been. It’s scary, but we think it’s getting bigger. As these new collectors enter the market (hopefully they won’t get burned) and mature into larger collectors, so many values MUST rise. We already have a real shortage of even coins with higher pops. Just look at Morgan’s. GEM white slightly better dates can not be found in any frequency. We suspect because so many of the dates in MS65/66 are below $5,000.00 places like Whatnot and our “black hole” are just sucking up those coins. That leaves a huge area of coins valued $5,000.00-$25,000.00 that are just as rare but have not been hit by that huge tidal wave of buyers-yet! It is our strong opinion that as the financial markets waver, people will look more towards hard assets. Two leading money managers have told us 2025 will be a good year for coins. We agree (we are not hyping anything).
Do not be afraid to buy a quality coin today. The key is being able to hold it long term. People really do make money buying coins. See the $1 1795 3 LVS PCGS AU58 CAC we have listed? We sold it to the collector in 2016 for around $50,000.00 (we have it listed for $92,500.00). Last week we bought and sold a deal of MS 64/65 BN/RB Indian Cents. The collector bought them 20 years ago. The quality overall was a little off, but he still made a HUGE percentage. YOU CAN MAKE MONEY WITH THE COINS YOU BUY. One of our many sayings is: A smart collector makes the best investor. If you do not feel you can do it yourself, call or email someone like us. Simpson, Morelan, Half Dome, Black Cat and so many others have done just that. Look at their collectors. You do NOT have to be a big collector to get our full help or advice. BUYING RIGHT is what makes the difference.
GOLD
We still LOVE all gold coins. However, with how gold shot up so fast from the recent dip last week we got slightly queasy. In our opinion, we can see another dip coming soon (in our eyes a dip is a 10-15% drop).
Another dip will NOT affect things like Saints in MS64/65 CAC. Although bizarrely, we got our bid hit on a PCGS MS 64 CAC piece for $3,350.00 while spot gold was $3,310.00! That was crazy! We still believe in MS64/65 Saints that have such low to no premiums We also are starting to LOVE MS 66 Saints again. We did not see much movement in their premiums as gold soared. We think with so few available (MS66’s) at current levels and MS 65’s inching towards $4,000.00 a coin, MS 66’s should be $6,000.00 soon. There is a lot of promise it will all happen.
In the end, we believe gold is lock for $3,500.00-$4,000.00. We’d prefer a slower steadier climb than a $100.00 a day jump. We still like building a gold type set, buying generics, or buying random better gold pieces. Gold is and has always been the ultimate equities hedge and safety haven. Recently, there have been many people and governments buying all kinds of gold.
