1869 1C-$1 NGC ORIGINAL PROOF SET PR64RB – PR65 (CAC)

Legend is thrilled to own and offer this unique Proof Set.

Over the years we have handled many of the greatest matched original Proof Sets that exist (including the famous 1856-1879 run). We cannot believe the set we are offering is still intact. This set ranks as not only the most likely best for the date but also one of the very BEST MATCHED ORIGINAL PR SETS that still exists!

We labored for a few weeks since we bought this set as to what to do. The set is housed in a very old NGC “fatty” holder. Several of the coins have gold stickers, and the ones that don’t, a few of them should have. The way PCGS grades these days, we knew some would go up, but we were fearful they could be ridiculous and grade too tight. So every day we looked at the set to see if we had the nerve or viewed it differently. Keeping it in the original holders seemed like the best option.

We did bring it to Baltimore for an opinion. We asked the person who is probably the sharpest grader on Type like this, and he said he would have no hesitation cracking the set. He did agree it is 100% matched-original (the set is not sequentially numbered). He can tolerate the grading services madness and do the resubs—we just can’t stomach it.

Regardless, this is an irreplaceable set. It’s the kind of item you put away and make an heirloom.

H10C NGC PR65 CAC HIGH-END. Deep obverse toning. Killer rainbow reverse colors.
10C NGC PR65 GOLD CAC Great color. We don’t see anything on this coin. Possibly Cameo too—no promises.
25C NGC PR65 GOLD CAC SUPER HIGH END! At least a Cameo. Killer colors.
50C NGC PR65 GOLD CAC. We make NO promises: in our opinion, this coin is a PR 66+ Cameo minimum! Wow, does it have eye appeal!
$1 NGC PR65 CAC. Great colors too. We think it is better than just PR 65 (no promises).

You really have to see these remarkable coins in hand. Each one is unquestionably unmessed with, and we know we had never seen this set floating around.

Adding up values just by the current grades will not come close to this set’s value. The coins really are better than what the current holders say and we had no issue paying top dollar here. With that in mind, we would still encourage the new owner to keep the coins in these rare original holders. Playing the regrade game can be very risky today. Over time, the old holders add to the coin’s value.

Last, many people ask us if there is a set premium. YES. It really depends on the set. You can add 5-10% for a set like this as its in old holders, its fresh, and most of the coins could go up in grade. We suggest keeping the old holders. The coins will always be what they are.
