HOW FRUSTRATING
If it’s hard for you to figure a price, think of how hard it is for us. Little help is available today for determining pricing for both dealers and collectors. It is an area we felt we had to discuss.
We just had an instance where someone offered us $12,000.00 for a coin we paid $16,000.00 for. There were no auction records of a similar coin trading since 2019, and the sheets show $10,000.00. However, on the bourse floor, these coins sell for $14-$18,000.00.
You cannot use the CDN or ANY price guide. EVERY single one is behind. The CDN is really WHOLESALE. Even more frustratingly, none of them employs reporters to compile prices. We take a big gulp when we have to pay way over the sheets. We know many collectors will not understand our asking price. The only thing supporting us is that you won’t be able to buy a coin otherwise. There are many dealers stepping up and paying these numbers. Any dealer would because of extensive Want Lists. We do the same, and we must do it to have interesting inventory offerings.
Auction records help only if you understand them. Example: The $10 1933 James Stack MS66 sold for less than MS65 money. It was not a great coin. However, that does not mean 1933s have come down in value. A real superb 1933 PCGS MS 65 CAC is coming up for auction. We assure you, it will not sell for less money; in fact, we can see it bringing more! You need to work with a good dealer to interpret auction prices.
All we are saying here is that prices in many areas (especially better gold) are way above the price guides. If you want a coin, you have to step up. If you want to buy close to the sheets, you’re probably not going to buy a very nice coin.
NEWPS
Look what we have! A small group of coins priced UNDER $10,000.00!
The grand highlight of the offering is the 1921 Peace Dollar, PCGS MS66+ CAC. Next to the MS67 we owned 25 years ago, this coin is nearly its twin!
And be sure to check out the AMAZING 1900 matched original proof set. Sorry, we do not take children in trade!
Legend is buying. What do you have for sale?
