We adjust not putting up the big numbers we used too. It has nothing to do with the time of year (there really is no summer doldrums) or the fact Simpson is retired. It 100% has to do with a severe lack of coins. OMG, what we could sell IF we had the coins. Even commoner coins like $2.5 Indian’s in MS 65 or 81S DMPL in MS65. With the bigger coins, we need just about everything! It really does not matter if the coin is gold or not. although our motto “if its gold its sold” has never been more true. Heck, as many of you witnessed, we immediately sold two PCGS CAC MS65+ High Reliefs instantly off the web and could have easily sold 2 more. Proof type is making a strong comeback too. Not many dealers we know have huge inventories right now. That means prior to the show, we all will be running around like crazy trying to buy the crumbs the big guys and crack-out dealers left behind. This kind of situation is really making us lose sleep worrying about the show.
The best coins seem to be in strong hands. The more people do the right thing by holding long term, the more it actually hurts us. We have never seen a situation rise this fast where so many new people have entered the market. When Ebay was hot, that was a strong entrance for new players (Bob Simpson came to us from Ebay). However, it was not nearly as inventory draining as today. Add that to the nightmare of price guides being wrong and general price reporting, it is a nightmare to figure out what to pay even as a dealer. And buying out of auction at a price higher than the guides, does not allow for much of a profit at all.
All we can do is encourage collectors not to sit on their duplicates. At least that puts some coins in the system. You don’t want a coin world where the only places to buy and sell are the auction houses.
