THE PAN SHOW WAS STRONG
This was the news we had been waiting for, and it is now finalized. Everyone we spoke to who attended the PAN show did really well. Our “super secret stealth seller” achieved sales well into six figures (which is really strong for a regional show). Dealers still need many coins. We know the guys who sell on the apps are still aggressively selling coins in the $2-$10,000.00 range. The supply of better coins remains incredibly nonexistent. We cannot stress enough how app dealers moved in and drained all the good coins into what we call a deep black hole. Not even a trickle of coins is coming out (for us that changes mid-June).
It is our feeling that the Baltimore show will be weaker, which will have no bearing on the market. Many dealers just do not like being downtown in the summer. and are not attending (this happens every summer). We think the next big show is FUN in July. All of a sudden, many big-time dealers are going or taking tables. Legend will have a table at the show and WILL attend.
We all just have to struggle with empty slots in collections and not enough coins to sell for dealers. Our suggestions: do what you can. Try not to build big sets unless you have the time and budget to do so. Work on smaller things that you can complete (a box of 20, a Type set, a subset of something, or just buy what you like). A TRICK ABOUT COIN IMAGES
It is always hard to figure out what is a true image and what is not. The lovely images put out by PCGS are what we call “glam shots.” They are fine if you want a picture for your wall. They really make deep colors stand out as if they are electric.
If you are buying from auction, use the image of the coin in the holder. That is what we use to judge the colors (e.g., if the colors are dark, dull, or gray). Regardless, there is nothing better than having the coin in hand. Even asking a dealer to twirl a coin in a video does not compare and is not a better answer. GET THE COIN IN HAND!
SUMMERTIME BLAZ?
What will it be? Strong or the lazy days of summer?
So far the pool is open, and we’re all enjoying it. However, clearly, the market has cooled from what it was earlier this year. Too many dealers were doing huge business while gold prices were higher. Many even went out and bought rare coins.
The market is NOT coming down. All we are saying is the market is not explosively on fire like at the FUN Show or even CSNS. Too many coins have gone off the market for prices to just drop. BUT during the summer, if demand slows, we might see a short-term dip (MINOR).
Only time will tell if this summer will be a stud or dud. We are optimistic the coin market will remain strong. No reason to think any less as of today.
