For us, we are still selling a lot of coins. Our saying, ‘if it’s gold, it’s sold,’ has never been more true than now. However, due to a lack of sexier NEWPS and some people still digesting their ANA purchases, our sales this past week were a little slower. Interestingly, our sales numbers for the week would have been great for any other month. We are pinching ourselves that since mid-June (when we think things heated up), we have sold just over $10,000,000.00 worth of rare coins. No wonder we are brutally exhausted (Jose finally booked himself a vacation in December). That’s over a THOUSAND coins, which equates to a super heavy workload for all four of us here. Don’t take that the wrong way—we are happy to be so busy.
Demand is as strong as we have ever seen it (save for 1989). Coins priced below $5,000.00 are by far the easiest to sell. All gold is pretty easy to sell in any price range. GEM gold doesn’t last long on our website. We had sold many more GEM MS 65-66+ Saints than we realized in the past 90 days. Surprisingly, 95% of our ANA purchases are now sold. That is astonishing and something that has never happened before. If we didn’t have what could be a major show next week, we’d be “toast” as far as NEWPS goes. The only problem is some dealers are arriving Monday to start buying, and we can’t get there until Tuesday. Hopefully, there will still be some good ‘fruit’ hanging around! This scenario is what we lose sleep over. But in the end, at the ANA Show (which we were scared to death about), we were able to buy a small handful of great coins.
AS THE DEEP BLACK HOLE GROWS
Here are a few suggestions on how to play the current coin market as pieces get harder to find.
Suggestion #1: BUILD A BOX OF 20. The only catch here is that the theory of a ‘box of 20’ is based on you buying the ultimate coin for the grade—something truly stunning. The good news is it can be ANY coin you want in ANY grade. This route probably has the fewest restrictions and availability limits. On coins priced below $10,000.00, if we think it is worthy of a ‘box of 20,’ we write it below the descriptions. We are VERY strict about the coins we suggest.
Suggestion #2: BUILD A TYPE SET. It doesn’t matter whether it is silver or gold. The set grades can be AU58—to whatever you can afford. You can include any coin you want. All you need is a reference coin for the type. You also do not have to do a full set. It can be Quarters only for a type or a 12-piece gold set—again, your call. Building a Type set avoids a lot of the frustrations of completing a major set.
Suggestion #3: BUILD MINI SETS. We LOVE the idea of building a $5 Liberty set from 1900 to 1908 in MS65-66+. You can build a mini set in any area you choose (say, all O Mint Barber 10C or a short set of Walkers). We see many people building CC Morgan sets in various grades today. Granted, in some areas, you may have to wait a while, but in the end, as long as you have really quality pieces with extraordinary eye appeal, you will do very well.
Suggestion #4: We stand by our LOVE of building any kind of BARBER PROOF COLLECTION. Denominations do not matter. The grades can be whatever you can afford. We love the low mintages and low pops. We can’t say this enough: make sure the mirrors have strong clarity (no haze).
Suggestion #5: SIMPLY BUY WHAT YOU LIKE. That’s pretty similar to #1 and #2. If you like GEM Saints, then buy the best darn ones you can find.
We have always believed a smart collector makes the best investor. The key to making money buying coins is to always buy the VERY BEST you can afford and HOLD. Buying a coin in 2022 and wanting to sell today is NOT a long-term approach at all. When you sell, you want your coins (especially if from auction) to be buried deep by a few years. You can make money buying coins; you just have to do it right! We can help you, like we’ve helped so many over the years. Just email or call us.
NEWPS
As of this writing, we have a dozen coins priced UNDER $10,000.00. You have no idea how hard it was to buy those coins. Know that our NEWPS post at 12 AM Fridays. So don’t wait too long to check them out.
We highly recommend you look over our entire PCGS CAC inventory NOW. We have a show we are going to this upcoming week where we expect strong demand from dealers like us. That means (like at ANA), many of the coins listed now will be sold at the show. And we do NOT have to give discounts to dealers either! The market for nice PCGS CAC and CACG coins is strong in so many areas. This is NOT hype; it has actually been happening.
SEE US AT THE GGCC SHOW IN CHICAGO THIS WEEK: TABLES
OUR OFFICES ARE CLOSED FRIDAYS. WE ANSWER OUR EMAILS DAILY FRIDAY AND OVER THE WEEKEND. WE DO NOT CHECK PHONE MESSAGES UNTIL 9 AM ON MONDAYS.
