It is amazing to us how well preserved this coin has remained over 215 years. We could see prior to certification people call thing coin a choice unc. With the pinpoint grading of today, PCGS has deemed it a near miss. We think the coin is SUPER high end.
Superior surfaces are exceedingly clean and smooth. All a strong glass finds are some stray lines and a few die cracks. This coin is totally original and certainly was never dipped or messed with. The color is a rich even deeper gold. A good luster does beam from all over. Miss Liberty and the details do not show discoloration anywhere on the high points and are certainly extremely well struck. Not only is this coin a HIGH END 1803, in our opinion, it should be at least a + (no promises). The eye appeal is fabulous!
PCGS 28, NGC 8. CAC 8. We paid really strong for the coin because we really liked it-and we went against a few crack out geniuses. One thing we know for sure, you do NOT see these offered in ANY grade of AU 58 or higher PCGS CAC. ALL the price guides are wrong here and NON certainly reflect any CAC coins accurately. Prior to this coin selling, the last PCGS CAC piece to hit the auction block was back in 2012! As we said in a blog a few weeks ago, time like that does add value!
This is an awesome piece worthy of an awesome AU or even MS collection!
