The last GEM 1888 $2.5 we have handled (and the only one) was back in 2016. Do NOT be fooled by the pops, this is a VERY rare date in true GEM! There is NO question this coin is closer to MS66 then MS65.
Remarkable surfaces are super clean and have a thicker satiny like texture. We used a strong glass and found only one tiny tick that probably held it from MS66. The luster is there and is thicker satiny glowing type. Both sides enjoy a GEM deeper gold color. There are NO spots or discolorations. Miss Liberty and the details are fully struck and do stand out. The eye appeal is wonderful!
PCGS 23, NGC 26, CAC 8. PCGS has graded only 3 coins MS65+. The current Collectors Universe Value is $8,000.00. NO PCGS CAC pieces have ever been sold via auction. Even if you do not collect $2.5 Lib’s, this is a great coin just to put away!
