1C 1909 VDB PCGS PR65 RB YOUNG-DAKOTA

This was purchased by a customer of Legend out of the Young Dakota Sale 10/2019. They needed to sell a few coins. Hence, this coin is now for sale!

Here is the auction description with some updates: From the first year of this ever popular series, the 1909 V.D.B. Matte Proof cent is one of the rarest dates in the entire series. Despite a mintage of 1,194, which is the 3rd lowest in the Matte Proof series, it is thought that between 400 and 600 were actually sold to collectors, the rest, either destroyed at the mint or met some other unfortunate fate. Today, PCGS CoinFacts notes that around 200 are known in all grades (Population Report data from PCGS and NGC bear this out, with 192 graded in designations combined). With the lowest survival rate among the series, demand for this issue has done nothing but go up over the years, especially for beautifully preserved GEMs such as the coin offered here.

Stunning, satiny matte surfaces offer a bold vibrancy. Ample original RED color blazes in the protected areas of the design, mellowing to a soft brown. Rotation in a light reveals some very attractive violet overtones, particularly on the reverse. Some very minor flecks seen on both sides are a testament to the total originality of this highly eye appealing beauty. A single tiny mark on the reverse near the O in ONE will serve as a pedigree marker for years to come. The eye appeal is amazing! This is a date that because of its huge demand has led to hoarding. We know of a single holding that has been offered that contains over 50 pieces of the approximate 200 known.

PCGS 31, NGC 14, CAC 6. Do not let the population reports fool you! No CAC-approved example in PR65 RB has ever sold in auction-except this coin (which realized $35,250.00). Going back to 1996, the auction prices database shows just 11 PCGS PR65 RBs selling in auction. A casual perusal of the examples offered this decade show none that have the eye appeal of the presently offered coin, indeed, we like it as much as the PR66 RB that we sold in July 2018 for $55,813. The current PCGS CAC value is $36,300.00. Opportunity knocks loud here!
