$50 1851 HUMBERT 880 PCGS AU58+

There are so few coins around that are cool out side of auctions. When we got an email and was offered this coin our eye balls tried to pry the coin from the screen. This wicked cool coin is one of our all time favorite coins to buy. This coin really does border MS and is probably the BEST AU we have ever seen!

These large $50 denominated gold “slugs” or “ingots” as they were referred to during the time of issue were produced to facilitate large commercial transactions. The provisional mint was operated by Moffat & Co in 1851. The expert team that produced these impressive coins were institutions in Gold Rush San Francisco and the facility became, in 1854, the U.S. branch mint in San Francisco. Because of that, and their federally inspired design, these have often been seen as a “crossover” coin, collected in expanded U.S. gold type sets, not just by dedicated pioneer or territorial gold specialists.

The quality of this piece is amazing. Not only are the surfaces clean, the rims totally bump and hit free. THAT IS REALLY RARE. The reverse barely has any ticks and no hits (another rare fact).  There is a faint traced of semi prooflike mirrors on the obverse. There also is a faint trace of reddish gold on the obverse too. The rest of the coin is original gold. There are NO spots or discolorations. You do not need a glass to see the virtually fully struck features. The eye appeal is PHENOMENAL!

PCGS 6, NGC 4, CAC 4. THIS IS THE ONLY AU58+ GRADED BY PCGS. PCGS has possibly graded only 9 better. There is no auction record for a PCGS AU58+. It should be noted a PCGS CAC AU 58 (NO +)  sold for $120,000.00 08/2019 (it was NOT this coin). The current Collectors Universe value is $180,000.00. If you were to take all the beaned examples of this date you’d have LESS then 10 pieces.

This is such a remarkable piece of history. As we mentioned before this is one of our favorite coins that exists. We consider this a once in a life time purchase.
