50C 1795 Y OVER STAR 0-121 PCGS MS64 EX POGUE
$275,000.00
This is nothing less then an AMAZING coin! Legend has long been SERIOUS fans of all 1795 Halves. Having placed two 1795 MS64 and 2 MS62’s in our career, we follow the movement of these. Few collectors realize how rare these are in AU and above. We have been a huge fan of this coin from the day we saw it. We missed it at the sale due to being on the phone for the 1795 MS65 (2 lots before) and then the 1795 Small Head MS62 (lot after). When we saw it for sale in the after market-we bought it at what was still NOT our max bid! We’ve been looking for 25+ years for great 1795 50C and have only found three coins prior, we assure you, this piece is one of the very best you will EVER see!
You can certainly tell the Mint was no automated back in 1795. This coin has lots of die cracks and Mint made issues-including die clashing. Overall, the surfaces are smooth and clean. There really is no evidence of handling. A surprising strong luster is genuine and is unbroken. The luster also enhances the beautiful golden brown/rose/violet/pale purple original colors that blanket both sides. Every detail is remarkably struck and stands out clearly. Most important, there are few adjustment marks-and the ones there are -you need a strong glass to see! That is highly unusual. The eye appeal is incredible!
PCGS 4, NGC 5, CAC 3. This is the Pogue coin (lot 1098) that sold for $199,750.00. It was in the Foxfire and Dr Judd collections prior. We will state this again,w e did NOT buy it at the sale. The amount we paid was within one increment of our max. The last one of these we sold was to Simpson back in 2009. We PAID $285,000.00 for that coin. The coin we are offering really has not been on the market since 1993. Even then it was a quick private transaction. If you seek an extra ordinary 1795 Half, then this is your coin. We assure you, your not going to have another opportunity at an MS63 or higher for many years to come!
