Here is Stacks description: “Magnificent and multicolored, this example ranks among the finest survivors of this rare variety. It combines extraordinary quality with extraordinary rarity. A sunset prism of color surrounds the obverse device, contrasting with mottled deeper gray and pale lilac on the reflective fields. The reverse is a subtler and more even blend of pastel violet and gold. Both sides are very sharply struck and exhibit excellent visual appeal. A long but densely curled lintmark gathers between Liberty’s knee and bent elbow, only the most notable of several significant lintmarks scattered over the obverse. The present hairlines are minor, and no major marks are seen. A substantial area of raised die rust is noted in front of Liberty’s face. This example also shows a very crisp low spot, caused by a struck-through remnant on the die, below the right side of F of OF. The DTS die state nomenclature has been pegged to this exact specimen, identifying this coin as the definitive Die State A with strong low spot. Later strikes show this depression diminished. The starless reverse employed on this reverse was first used in 1838; this variety was not coined until 1869 at the earliest and perhaps not until the early 1870s. Research by Saul Teichman has traced only five examples, one of which is impounded in the collection of the American Numismatic Society.
