AN UNEXPECTED POWERFUL WEEK

The FUN Show was more ho hum, so we expected not too much to happen this past week. We were so wrong!

Legend Numismatics did $1 million dollars in sales! WOW! It all started Monday with one coin worth $150,000.00! Then things just snowballed. We sold soup to nuts, including a lot of Type. That perplexes us because at FUN we sold mostly gold. Activity off our website was strong with multiple sales happening daily. We even filled some long standing Want Lists. Collectors seemed to be in a coin mode and were hungry for great quality. The key word here: QUALITY. Of course eye appeal was important too. Having one of the largest PCGS CAC inventories of great quality and eye appealing coins made the sales happen more easily for us.

THE FUN AUCTION

The Heritage sale saw choppy prices. However, the PCGS CAC coins overall sold very strongly. Legend Numismatics set a huge world record buying the $1 1881-CC PCGS MS67+ DMPL for $228,000.00. When it comes to finest coins, our customers want them-and this 81CC we considered to be one of the finest CC DMPL’s that exists. We congratulate our old friend DT Miller on the sale of his DMPL Morgan Collection. One more item: His $1 1893-S PCGS MS63 brought a record strong $444,000.00 (guess our $300,000.00 total bid was too puny)!

Legend is fully back to our old buying habits. We spent $1 million but we lost out on over $3 million! Ouch! There was really strong competition in this sale. We knew we were going against many end users.

The Simpson coins-especially the Patterns were VERY strong. Starting with a G$1 J-67 1836 Original PCGS PR67 CAC bringing a whopping $90,000.00. Two lots later an 1849 G $1 J-115 PCGS MS62 brought a world record $105,000.00. The switch was clearly flipped “ON” for his Patterns. The highlight was the $5  J-271 1860 PCGS PR64 DCameo CAC. It brought a whopping $1,140,000.00. We can tell you, when Mr Simpson was buying gold Patterns, he always felt they all should be million dollar coins. His Proof gold as we expected sold strong. He also had a killer $1 1880 Morgan PCGS PR69 (we did not understand why no bean) which brought a very respectable $204,000.00. .

For now, the market seems very healthy. We say for now only because as we fade away from the FUN show, its auctions, and dealers NEWPS; the excitement always slows. Long Beach is at the end of January. Sadly, it’s become just a large regional show. Crime in LA ranks among the factors keeping it down. We still do the show, but we do not expect results anywhere near FUN or a Central States. Not a lot of great fresh material pops anymore at the show. February concerns us even more as there are NO major shows or auctions to find fresh coins to keep people’s interest high. March has 2 back to back shows-ANA Midwinter and Baltimore.
