What is a great coin? To us, a great coin can be a GEM 1880S $1 with cameo contrast or a 1794 Bust Dollar in SUPERB condition. Of course, a great coin MUST have fabulous eye appeal. For sure, we did not see many great coins at FUN show.
As we have been saying, since the pandemic, the coin market has expanded far beyond the reaches we normally think of. It is obvious to us that more people than ever are in the coin market place and buying. Some are doing sets, while others are just buying what they like. It seems like once the coins are off the market, they go into a deep black hole and are never to be seen again for many years. We’re now seeing collections sold with pedigree/names that we’ve never heard of, these collectors bought their coins long ago. Collectors buying today have the same mentality and have the collective mindset that they will hold on to their coins for the foreseeable future.
If you buy great coins and hold on to them, which we can’t stress enough, you should do well. Thinking you can buy today and sell tomorrow RARELY ever works-unless it’s a strong bull market. Recently, we went to collector’s safe deposit box, he had a small group of DMPL’s. One in particular was a KILLER $1 1878-CC PCGS MS64 DMPL. When he bought, about 15 years ago, he paid super strong. Today, he could get a small fortune of at least 5x what he paid for it. Of course, to our disappointment he decided to keep it. Today, we see many people who bought coins within the last 3 years wanting to sell for various reasons. A few will earn small profits because they bought coins many collectors need and are really nice, but most will not.
In the end, great coins usually do hold their own. It’s important you always buy the very BEST quality for the grade with eye appeal. Since the end of 2023, it’s been obvious to us that the supply of great coins is nowhere near as plentiful as it used to be only 3 years prior.
