We surrender! There were far too many auctions and sessions during this past week. We almost missed a big session because we thought it would take place later in the afternoon, but it took place at midday. We estimate that the auctions sold close to $100 million in rare coins. While that may sound like a lot, the big rare car auctions on the West Coast will take place next week. They’re showcasing only five cars, each expected to fetch $20 million! Coins are cheap, folks.
Strangely enough, we saw silver coins of earlier Type (especially Bust Halves) take the lead in realizing good prices. Legend bought the 1928-S $1 PCGS MS65 OGH CAC for $51,600.00 and the $2.5 1911-D PCGS MS65+ CAC for $87,000.00. Unfortunately, the buyers for much of the better and even proof gold seemed to be sitting on the sidelines. Why? Perhaps licking their wounds from a suddenly volatile stock market? It’s anyone’s guess.
Legend sat through the two major sales and tried to “pick off” the BEST coins that had the BEST value. Before we knew it, we had spent well over $600,000.00! You will see our purchases spread out over the next 30 days; chances are we won’t get any lots until very late next week (too late to prep for listing).
The market is clearly now a BUYER’S MARKET. Auctions tend to be more unpredictable. Do not miss an opportunity when presented-especially if it’s a very low pop coin! Respect the fact that a dealer invests time and effort to examine hundreds of lots, analyze the coins, and, in many cases, conduct live bidding. Sure, they may take the thrill away, but they have done all the hard work for you! So trust us when we tell you a coin is a great buy.
