We expected the post FUN activity to be somewhat sluggish-it was anything but that. Our activity was brisk. The mammoth FUN Auction saw record after record shattered on the best coins. Pretty much soup to nuts was strong-save for Nickels and some areas of Type. Gold coins of course lead the way with strength. Even generic gold sold every well. We really can’t see this market slowing much any time soon. The demand for great coins is just too strong.
THE FUN AUCTION
Kaboom! The fireworks were exploding all over the place. Nearly $50,000,000.00 in coins found new homes (and that does not include Bass). A few of the coolest coins we bought: 10C 1796 PCGS MS66+ CAC $372,000.00, the 25C 1815 NGC MS67+ CAC $168,000.00, and the $20 1911 PCGS MS67 CAC $432,000.00. We did buy many more coins , picking our way through the sale. Very few coins fell through the cracks.
Our good friend Tom Bender, saw many of his coins sell for record prices including the unique H.10 1870-S PCGS MS64 CAC which brought $3,120,000.00. Can you make money in coins? YES! Tom paid $1,400,000.00 for the 70S! ! Of course, Bob Simpson’s Saints sold totally INSANE! With MULTIPLE bidders for each lot. On one hand, it’s sad to see a great set broken up, but to see so many collectors eagerly wanting to buy a piece or two made us proud to have been part of building Mr. Simpson’s collections.
There are just too many highlight prices from the sale to post.
HOW TO COLLECT IN THIS MARKET
Buy the BEST quality and rarity that you can afford. As evidenced by the limited supply of great coins, do NOT think too long when one appears. Even if its premium prices, if you don’t buy it, someone else will these days. Also, do NOT be afraid to pay a premium for a coin that has seldom appeared. All you are doing is setting a realistic market price.
We still are bullish on GEM Gold Type sets. That way you can include what YOU want. We also LOVE the box of 20 concept as you are not locked into building an impossible date set. The good old fashioned buy what you like idea works even better!
