THE TAXMAN COMETH
Last week we were busy busy selling. This week we were busy busy negotiating earth shattering deals. Our sales slowed unexpectedly.
After speaking to many collectors, for whatever reason this years Oct 15th tax time slowed the market more so then April 15th. Obviously this too shall pass and we will be back to the crazy on again off again thriving market we enjoy.
Our sales this week were to collectors with specific wants or set builders. No one stepped up and bought anything just because it was cool or to put away. It happens. The sales of gold however (especially generic gold) were still surprisingly strong.
We are highly confident the market will return in full muster around the New Orleans PCGS Invitational which includes our major Legend inspired auction. It actually is one of the best auctions of the year with 100% quality in every coin!
RARITY
When we write descriptions we always include the pops. Lately, we have been seeing more and more coins where the pops are so darn low (12 or below) with prices generally at levels that simply sound too cheap.
Example: 10C 1916 Barber PCGS MS67 CAC. PCGS 8, NGC 6. That is ONLY 14 if there really are that many graded (allow for upgrades, crossovers, etc). 103 years old and the coin is pretty much in the ultimate state of preservation and its only worth $2,750.00? It does not matter that its a dime. Its still a coin that they do not make any more that has survived in such a great condition with so few remaining.
A dozen or so coins in this great big collecting world is NOT a lot. 20 is not either. Picture a football stadium seating 60,000 with just 20 people. The next generation stadium could be 70,000 and those 20 people will look even smaller-if they all show up.
While the market maybe skipping certain areas, its time these areas get a little respect. Comb through MS and Seated and Barber coins and look at the pops. Look at things like 3CN’s in MS. You’ll be shocked how many seriously top graded coins you can buy for under $5,000.00. The same goes for Proof coins as well. We love all Barber Proofs because the mintages are mostly below 1,000. Highly unlikely all survived and even more unlikely all survived in top conditions.
The Registry game has blurred reality and made rarity almost secondary. Do not be afraid to collect or invest via rarity. There are some really incredible values out there now. Time should change things and have true rarity succeed. Remember coins are always a long term hold.

First, it is a myth Legend Numismatics only sells high priced top pop coins. We sell pretty much all coins-BUT (BIG BUT) our emphasis is on REAL top quality. We do not sell MS68 Morgans all the time. Our love is dealing with collectors and helping them build the holdings/collections they want. We have always viewed building collections as a team effort. In many cases the collectors sets are sets we’d love to build for ourselves.
You’ll find we are different. We fight for what is right. We deplore coin doctoring and do our best to fight it and or help collectors affected by it (we love to do combat with the PNG on their belief they are fighting coin doctoring). Even simple things like the price you pay for a coin-we fight all the time to buy coins at the “right” prices. We are also there when you need to sell. Remember, messing with auctions on your own is a huge risk. Working with a good dealer-does give you a safety net. We have the ultimate in connections, we are smart, and we are real bourse floor qualified dealers.
Plus, we get first shot on many cool coins. You will want to work with us for that reason alone! Our prices are always based on what we pay. We are more then reasonable. We also attend every major show and auction.
