We commend Larry Shepard and his team for creating a dealer-friendly show from scratch. Sure, there were a few hiccups, but we feel the next show in Fort Lauderdale will be a huge success. Right now, with the Long Beach Show dwindling there needs to be a new show to replace it. It’s for the good of the market. Legend Numismatics is looking forward to a long and successful relationship with the Great American Coin Shows.
DEALER DAY
We were horribly nervous about selling. The show coincided within a few weeks of ANA and took place during a typically dead period.
On Monday, we saw one person. They bought nothing, and that really freaked us out. They typically buy a decent amount. From that point on, we would be pleased selling anything. Lost sleep that night.
Tuesday was Dealer Day. There was a huge room with probably 50 tables. A mini-preshow. We caught a break. The first person to sit down with us at ANA did the same thing. They spent well into five figures, and we breathed a huge sigh of relief. As dealers came in, action really picked up. We sold to eight of our ten dealer room members. Our total for Tuesday was $100,000.00. We were super pleased and kind of shocked. We couldn’t imagine dealers not being desperate to raise money to pay their ANA bills. Overall, there was a lot of trading going on. We saw NO evidence of anyone dumping.
Our “super secret stealth seller” shared a table with us. He was like the energizer bunny. He had dealer after dealer buying from him. We won’t know his total until the weekend, but we can assume he had high numbers. He sold soup to nuts. We wish our coins could sell as hot as his; we’d be doing millions per show!
When the show opened Wednesday, things turned quiet. Attendance was light. That was more of what we expected. We did sell a couple of five-figure coins; they were nothing to write home about. We did no sales to collectors, which was disappointing.
Back home in our office, we were still selling coins. We sold several coins valued $10-$50,000.00. That was surprising to us. Better gold is very strong. As are Morgans.
Morgans are hot, actually. The telemarketers we mentioned in last week’s Market Report are eating them up. They are willing to purchase stunning white PCGS CAC coins valued at up to six figures. For those guys, building big Morgan sets can be a huge moneymaker. Thus, it made it really hard for us to buy neat Morgans (although we did buy a gorgeous 1885-CC PCGS MS67+ for a Want List). Certain Morgan dates and grades are indeed increasing in value.
