THE $5 1822 SELLS FOR $8,400,000.00 IN AUCTION
All we can say is WOW! The 1822 is not the kind of coin that is super sexy quality wise. It packed a powerful story though. The buyer is currently unknown. Congrats!
Another sale highlight: the 50C 1797 PCGS M66 CAC Pogue sold for $1,680,000.00! Legend Numismatics was the underbidder. A long time collector we know bought it.
Two other remarkable prices: 1C 1897 PCGS PR67+ DCameo CAC $108,000.00, 5C 1913 TYI PCGS PR68 CAC $78,000.00 (another coin we underbid). Overall, prices were strong-very strong. A $1 1924 PCGS MS67 sold for $33,600.00 and a $1 1889-CC PCGS MS63 CAC sold for $50,400.00. A wildly toned Cleveland PCGS MS68 CAC brought $43,200.00. Clearly great coins brought great money. WOW!
Breaking news: the Paquet $20 PCGS MS67 CAC has privately traded hands for a price in excess of $5,000,000.00! Legend handled the coin many years ago.
The upper end of the market has turned from being price conscious to the value is in ownership-at any price. This is NOT a ridiculous ideology. Look at what is being bought. Its not widgets or marginal coins. The power of the big money buying HAS trickled down to coins $5,000.00 and higher.
There is an unbelievable amount of money out there that wants to go places. It has found the coin market. Only a year ago million dollar coins were languishing. Today there are multiple bidders! Again, ownership is what its all about.
In ALL price ranges, gold coins are the most sought after by far. Anything (silver) that is of high quality, low pop, and has good looks is also highly sought after. You can NOT be meek in the auctions or hope something falls through the cracks. NOT happening!
If you are not working with a dealer or have strong experience, stick with PCGS CAC ONLY! Paying the premium is more then worth it and is like an insurance policy.
At the moment we are in the what appears to be an early stage of a bull market.
THE PCGS INVIATIONAL
This was our first show in a year. It was worth the trip. While there were only 3 dealers of our caliber there, there was a ton of activity happening. It is a “MUST ATTEND” show still.
Even at a PCGS Invite PCGS coins were rare! Forget about looking for the CAC bean.
We are shamed to tell every one we bought UNDER $100,000.00. We tried hard to buy. There was NOTHING of our caliber there this show.
One thing we did do was sell. We put out a single case with some coins we were ready to move. We sold OVER $200,000.00 out of the case-at strong money. We did not even lug our coins around! Dealers clearly needed coins.
Our super secret stealth seller was back in his groove selling $377,000.00. He had soup to nuts and nothing of our caliber.
It was great to see many “old friends”. Getting back into the groove was no problem at all. We fully expect strong attendance at the April Show with more of the “regular” dealers attending. Normalcy is coming back.
NEWPS
As you can see, we posted none this week. Rather then have a really small offering, we are saving up for next week.
We attended the PCGS Invite to buy-and came up short. We scratch our heads as to how we have survived the pandemic successful finding coins.
You can be assured we will keep digging hard and paying top dollar to find the very best coins to offer. Never will we lower our standards to make a sale. That is what Legend Numismatics is about.
