COLLECTORS SELL FOR VARIOUS REASONS
Cash flow, illness, death, opportunity, or even the end of the hunt could be reasons for collectors to sell. Now that we are pretty much over the pandemic coin market, we see no flood of selling. The only major collection was Bass-and the insiders knew that was coming. There is no sign we are any where near the top of the market for coins. Right now the middle of the market is experiencing a slow time, but coins below $5,000.00 and above $100,000.00 are strong. There are many major sets being built, thus there is major competition. Demand far out strips supply. As we said last week, one painting is now double plus the amount in a FUN auction.
Today, we wish more collector would sell. WE NEED BETTER COINS-especially better gold, white CC’s in high grade, and cool high grade MS+PR Trade Dollars. This past summer we bought a $2 million dollar collection to get at 3 coins we needed. Our sales are substantially off because we can not buy the right coins. Our biggest customers have not bought coins in the last few MONTHS!!!! OUCH!! This is where the market is at-almost bone dry of great coins. If it was the peak, we’d be coin rich-which we absolutely are not-nor is anyone else.
*********************************************************************************Yet again, this week in the art market (we really do think it has similarities to coins) a Warhol sold for $85 million. The intensity of buyers for high end are and coins is almost rabid right now. We have changed our attitude about bidding at the FUN Sale. We used to use some restraint. Now, if our customer really needs a coin, we will bid until it hurts. Is this bad? Short term yes. Long term absolutely just look how well Simpson did with every coin he paid a record price for. Note: it is a myth to expect an underbidder to still be there when $10’s of millions in great coins are being sold. Usually they shop for other coins.
