Larry was smart. He hired a veteran dealer and tasked him to buy great coins (like Simpson did with us). Due to his untimely death, the family inherited the coins and held on to them. We’d guesstimate his coins were with the family for about 20 years. We assure you that during this time he could have sold ANY of the big great coins for serious profits,. Instead his family chose now is the time to sell and donate the profits to charity.

These exceptional prices more then prove-yet again that if you by the best quality and hold, you WILL enjoy a significant return. Do not say well this was a rich guy who was able to make the right purchases. ANY collector in ANY price range can enjoy the same kind of returns.
You can NOT go and build a collection of any kind today and expect to sell it for great profits within a year or two. No matter who was your agent. While you may have coins that will net some profits, the majority probably won’t. The definition of holding long term is 10+ years. Plus, the greatest collections all had great dealers working with them. Collectors just do not get access to coins like these. Plus, using a dealer you won’t buy any dogs.
We were disappointed in our purchases as even on the smaller coins the prices shot up above our imagination (and as you know, we think really strong).
Many of these coins probably fell back in the deep black hole of mystery buyers. Coins like these are so powerful, the buyer of the 1886-O PCGS MS67DMPL called it his “all time favorite Morgan” while he had dreamed owning it ever since he saw it 20 years ago. The buyer is a major dealer who has handled some of the greatest coins ever! Our all time favorite coin the sale-$1 1895-O PCGS MS67 CAC. We think its an easy + candidate. Never saw another 95O even close to it in quality and eye appeal.
Always buy the best you can afford. Remember that eye appeal and quality are everything.
THE REGULAR MARKET
The rest of the non named sale did incredibly well. We got shut out on 85% of what we bid on. And we weren’t just underbidders, we were way below second fiddle. We are thrilled with the crumbs we bought. The market is clearly still starved for fresh coins (even junky gold sold crazy strong). In the end, this sale was probably our weakest ever in terms of buying at a major auction.
If there were coins to trade, it would be strong. Next weeks Simpson sale has only a handful of non pattern coins. Regardless, there will be one or two coins set “beyond pluto” prices.
Gold is still crazy. The huge drop in price only sent gold buyers on a frenzy to buy even more. There just is not hardly ANY PCGS CAC better gold to buy.
There is still plenty of money in the world-a pink diamond of 14.8 carats just sold for $27,000,000,00! The puppets that were in the Rudolf TV Christmas movie from 1964 just brought $368,000.00. Last, a racing pigeon just brought $1,900,000.00! We firmly believe coins have so much potential with the money that is out there.
Do not wait for the printed prices to move up. Values have quietly crept up for months now. Follow the auction prices realized. The smart money is has been buying all along. Collectors are starting to come back to life with the elections now over.
We do still recommend building a gold Type set. You can put in it what YOU want. And we still like all Proof 65 and higher Barbers.
