We are shocked at some of the prices realized in the Thursday night’s heritage sale. Collectors clearly are starving for nice coins. We thought we were in the summer doldrums – from the results, we say maybe not! We can also tell you, in many cases in our Regency 60 sale (which goes off next Thursday evening, we have crazy eyeballs so far. incredibly Legend had a heck of a week. All of the sudden we sold our $5 1885 PCGS SPR65 DC CAC, $3 1885 PCGS PR67 Cameo CAC and the $2.5 1846 PCGS MS63 CAC. Of course, we sold other coins as well. put it was like the light switch was all of the sudden turned on. At FUN we were looking for something as simple as a Matte Proof Buffalo in PR66 CAC PCGS. We could not find a single piece!
Do understand, this does not mean every coin has jumped in value this summer. A lot of Type lingers that should not, in our opinion. But we do believe as time goes on, these pieces will go off the market into the deep apparently never-ending black hole. Many people did take time off in July. So, it remains to be seen. It is also our strong opinion; you won’t find many fresh or exciting coins at ANA.
At some point, prices for great coins have to rise. The demand is bigger than it was during the pandemic bull run. And now look, the market seems to be pretty much out of fresh coins! So do NOT think every printed price guide is correct. We just had a coin that was bought back in 2014 which showed far less than what was paid for it. The problem is that the coin is a pop 1 and has not been out in public since then. In our opinion, a coin like that is easily worth 25% + OVER what we saw published. You sure cannot buy another. That is another reason why a collector should work with a dealer. You can’t really afford to miss out on a fresh pop 1. You might not be able to reason the price, but we as experienced dealers can.
Also, know PCGS non-CAC coins seem to have a slight bump in value too. But it’s mostly nice gold on in a series where you can complete a set.
